How to Get a Contractor License in Nevada

Getting licensed in Nevada is one application per classification, and the Board will not consider an incomplete one. So the order that matters is less about steps in sequence than about assembling a single complete filing — because the examination deadline starts running the moment it is filed.

One application per classification

NAC 624.590(1) is unambiguous: “A person must make a separate application for each classification of license in which the applicant desires to conduct business.” Subsection 2 adds that the Board “will not consider an incomplete application”.

Those two sentences together set the shape of the whole process. Deciding which classification covers the work is not a preliminary — it determines how many applications there are, and the application fee is charged per application. See what each step costs.

What has to be in it

NAC 624.590(2) lists the required contents “without limitation”, including all applicable fees, documentation supporting the applicant’s experience, information that has to be confirmed by a bank, and the financial statement required by NAC 624.593. The experience documentation may take several forms — among them four or more certificates of work experience on a Board form, a substantially similar governmental master certification, or transferable military experience and training.

Naming a qualifying party

An application names one individual who qualifies on the business’s behalf, and the requirement is substantive: that person must be regularly employed by the licensee and actively engaged in the classification they qualify for. The financial statement sets the monetary limit

The statement filed with the application is what the Board uses to set the monetary limit on the license, and what the statement must be scales in four bands with the limit requested. That is covered under the requirements, and it is worth resolving before filing rather than after — the band determines whether a CPA has to compile, review or audit it, and how recently.

Then the examination, the bond and the insurance proof

Where the Board requires an examination, it is administered by an independent testing service, and the qualifying party must pass within six months of the application being filed — three attempts, and a third failure voids the application. Before a license issues, NRS 624.270(1) requires a surety bond in a form acceptable to the Board or, in lieu of one, a cash deposit. NRS 624.256(1) separately requires proof of industrial insurance covering the applicant’s employees, with alternatives including an affidavit for an applicant with no employees who does not intend to subcontract or to bid for a principal contractor.
